Sunrise UMC is thirty years old.
We have accomplished so much in those years, guided by God's love and grace. Inspired by the work we have done and the identity we have built, our church leadership gathered in conversation and reflection over many months to name a vision for ourselves and our community. Four words became our new direction, honoring who we have always been while embracing hope and anticipation for what's to come: feed and be fed.Â
These words are, first and foremost, grounded in scripture.Â
From John 21, we read how Jesus instructed Simon gently but emphatically to "feed my lambs" and "take care of my sheep." Then, in the only story present in all four gospels outside the Passion narrative, we see Jesus feed the five thousand, transforming a small offering into more than enough to fully satisfy the hunger of everyone in attendance. Finally, we look to Mark 12 and Jesus' commandments to love God and love each other. These ancient words serve as our steadfast foundation of our twofold mission: God feeds us s that we may feed others.
You've heard the phrase "you can't pour from an empty cup;" we hope Sunrise can be a place for you to come and be fed. Through worship and prayer, you can be fed spiritually. Through fellowship, you can be fed socially and emotionally. Through study, you can be fed mentally. This half of our mission is essential so that when you go out into the world to feed others, you are full of the love of God and this church community with more than enough to share.
And share we do! When we examined our past thirty years, it was clear that Sunrise simply loves to feed others. We know from experience that there are few acts as fulfilling as serving someone a meal, and so we do it as often as we can. For example, our Chili Cook-Off raises funds for our youth to participate in our annual ASP mission trip; we prepare and serve dinners for eXpand, a local organization that pairs tutors with students in need of reading assistance; we pack meals for the most impoverished areas of the world through Rise Against Hunger; and we partner with the Holly Springs Food Cupboard as their peanut butter shelf sponsor, donating thousands of jars of peanut butter they can distribute to local families in need for four years running. Feeding others is central to who Sunrise has always been.
Â
Feed and be fed is a way for us to stay focused on what is most important to us and to God's plan for us. These words keep us balanced, constantly shifting from one side to the other as we are fed in order to feed others. And of course, they offer us a vision of a world where everyone is fed, where all are satisfied. We can continue to reach for that future here and now, one worship service, one shared meal, one sincere prayer, one jar of peanut butter at a time.
